Westport Police Issue Halloween Tips
With Halloween approaching, the Public Safety Division of the Westport Police Department today offered a number of suggestions to make trick or treating safer.
The department said it will have extra patrols out on Saturday, Halloween night.
“These patrols will concentrate on increasing motorists’ awareness to slow down and watch for children along the roadways, as well as deterring acts of vandalism,” an announcement said.
Police urged that parents or other responsible adults accompany all elementary school-age children in their travels.
“Younger children should complete their rounds by 6:30 p.m., older ones by 8:30 p.m.,” the department said.
“Costumes should be easily visible and marked with reflector tape, and/or flashlights should be carried. Use make-up, face paint, or charcoal instead of masks to allow clearer vision.”
The department urged that candles not be used to illuminate pumpkins and said that flashlights or glow sticks are safer.
Additional tips:
--Travel in small groups to increase safety.
--Encourage children to stay in their own neighborhoods where they are known.
--Children should only go to the houses where outside lights are on. A darkened house is not prepared to receive them as possibly the occupants are elderly or ill.
--Use sidewalks whenever possible.
--Walk on the left side of the street facing traffic if sidewalks are not available.
--Travel only in well lit areas.
--Children should not eat any treats until they return home and parents can inspect the treats. Unfortunately, “doctored” treats are still a fact of life.
--Anyone receiving treats suspected of having been tampered with should call the Westport Police Department (341-6000) or their local police department immediately.
The department said it wants children to enjoy Halloween with good, clean fun, but warned that vandalism and acts of mischief which threaten safety or result in property damage will not be tolerated.
Parents are urged to monitor their children’s activities not only on Halloween night, but also on Friday, the traditional “Mischief Night,” the department said.
