Y Approval Within Sight

You know the signs: “Make Mahackeno Happen” and “MahackeNO.”

Now, after almost a decade of division, wrangling, and placards surrounding the Y’s quest for a new home, the Westport Y’s planned move from its downtown location to Camp Mahackeno appears to be heading toward a resolution.

In a work session Thursday night, the town’s Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission agreed that the Y’s proposed 102,000-square-foot structure on its 30-acre camp complies with each of the town’s 10 special permit standards.

“They went through each of the standards in the regulations one by one, and they voted on each one and made sure they were in conformance,” said Laurence Bradley, director of Planning and Zoning.

According to the P&Z, the proposed facility conforms to town’s Plan of Conservation and Development, would not have an adverse effect on adjacent areas, would not prevent or inhibit orderly growth or the development of the area, and would not interfere with highway circulation or compromise street and pedestrian safety.

Bradley said he is now in the process of preparing a resolution of approval scheduled to go to P&Z members on Aug. 14. The matter could be voted on at the commission’s Sept. 4 or 11 meetings, and according to Bradley, it looks like “the light at the end of the tunnel.”

“I don’t want to preempt their decision, but given that they did not consider any of their special permits standards to be out of compliance, and it would appear that that was a major hurdle for the application to get over,” he said.

“I think they have a reasonably good chance of the commission approving the whole thing,” he added. “I don’t want to say anything is a certainty until it happens, but certainly they got over major hurdle last night.”

That’s not to say that there could be law suits filed by the opposition, Bradley said.

Still, First Selectman Gordon Joseloff also seemed optimistic that the matter was close to being over.

“There have been a lot of steps along the way, and it’s held the town’s attention for almost a decade,” said Joseloff. “It has divided the town, but the fact is that it is near resolution, and at long last we are going to have some closure.”

Wow. Wow on so many levels. First, that this is finally going through. But we always knew it would. Second, that this piece of journalism includes no quotes from the “opposition,” but instead makes use of the opinions of the editor-in-chief/first selectman. And third, that Mr. Joseloff believes the P&Z;decision will bring some closure. Closure? A hard won, fair fight is one thing. But watching this farce has been almost physically painful for some of us. It is the most blatant of many signs that our town systems are broken, perhaps beyond repair.

Can the person who’s comments to this post ( http://www.westportnow.com/index.php?/v2/comments/20985/ ) were deleted by WestportNow.com last evening identify themselves.  I only got to read the comments via email notification which doesn’t identify the authors.  It might also be nice if WestportNow.com reminds people of the basis upon which they delete comments and close comments to posts. Quite frankly, I did not see anything in the deleted comments which were worthy of deletion.

John, it would appear that all comments from that thread have now been removed.either

Save Westport Now endorsed a majority of the P&Z;, while their chairman [good man] spoke against the proposal. What conclusions may be drawn about SWN now ?

the fix is in . . . . I’m through with reasoned letters and posts and public comment; that’s all I have to say at this point.

HEY! Whaz up? I’m getting multiple notices that “Someone just responded to your comment” on the Y, but there is no comment when I click the link.
Is there a computer glitch?

Posted by Tom Feeley on August 02, 2008 at 06:25 PM | #

no glitch, site-owner determines what stays and goes, and some stuff has been going lately . . . .

It’s there version of the Fairness Doctrine; Abolish speech, opinions and ideas that don’t agree with their own.

And they claim they’re the open minded and tolerant ones who embrace diversity (as long as it’s not diversity of opinion).

I suppose it was my comment, who got deleted.

Odd, I saw nothing in it worth deletion.

I just think it is very sad that this is happening to the Mahackeno site;
but maybe I’ve just lived in Westport too long to appreciate the ground which I walk on and spend most my time and day to day in.

So my mistake, I apologize for caring about the effect of this change of events.

No not to sound like a parent; but I don’t want to hear any complaints about issues with dispersed wildlife, traffic jams, noise pollution in the neighborhood, or water contamination issues.
But, of course, you all considered this and are okay with that.

Build on! Congratulations on your new building
