No cause of death was announced. The New Haven Register said Gonillo was a diabetic and has suffered from bouts of diabetic shock in the past. Gonillo had been sports director at News 12 for the past 12 years.
Prior to taking his job with News 12, Gonillo had worked at WELI-AM in New Haven and was Yale football play-by-play announcer in the mid-90s.
He had also worked as sports anchor on WVIT-30 and was a pregame and postgame host for Hartford Whalers hockey and Boston Celtics basketball on WTWS-TV in New London and WTXX in Waterbury. Gonillo was a graduate of the University of Hartford.

Bill was a class act who always supported Westport athletics. He was on the Staples Football sidelines this past Friday covering the Harding game. Bill should be remembered as great guy who loved local athletics. He will be missed.
So sad. Bill was a fan of Fairfield County, Fairfield County sports, and a true professional in his field. I will miss him on News 12.
