Going Down: 5 Charmers Landing
![]()
The house at 5 Charmers landing off Westport’s Saugatuck Avenue, featured earlier today as the WestportNow Teardown of the Day, was demolished today. Built in 1997, the 7,200-square foot home is the most recently constructed Westport home ever featured as a WestportNow teardown. A WestportNow reader reported that it was deemed uninhabitable due to water damage and mold. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

While it might seem that the wave of teardowns that has hit Westport as well as other parts of lower Fairfield County has reached ridiculous levels, this is one case where the house HAD to come down. It had massive amounts of water damage which warped the floors and rotted out much of the structure. In addition to this there was mold growing throughout the house. The house despite being only 10 years old was beyond repair. To repair the damage that the house sustained would have likely cost more, would likely not have repaired all the damage and would have been more difficult than it will to simply tear it down and start from scratch. The town knows this and in particular the Assessor’s office knows this since they had a notation declaring the house unlivable on their records. This is one case where it is unfortunate (especially considering the house was only built 10 years ago) but necessary to tear the house down.
