Online Tax Paying Coming Soon
By
First Selectmen Gordon Joseloff said today one of the most frequent requests he receives from Westport residents is to be able to pay taxes online and with a credit card, and now they will have their wish granted.
The Board of Selectmen this morning unanimously approved a plan to allow taxes to be paid by credit card, debit card, and online.
Finance Director Don Miklus said those who pay with a credit card or debit card will pay an extra 3 percent fee on top of their taxes.
Joseloff said in addition to paying online with a credit card, taxpayers can pay at a terminal in the Tax Collector’s Office with a credit card.
People will not be able to pay at the counter with a credit card, but a terminal in a private area will be set up for the payments, he said.
“This is another step in the direction of 24/7 e-government,” he said. “We want to make it more convenient for residents to do business with the town on their own schedule rather than the town’s schedule.”
The company town officials are using for the online payments, Stamford-based Official Payments Corp., works with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and the state, he said.
Town officials said they hope to have the facility available in time for residents to make their quarterly property tax payments due Oct. 1 but which may be paid without penalty through the end of October.
