Powerful Storm Kills One, Leaves Thousands Without Power

UPDATE A powerful rain and wind storm tore through Westport today and tonight, bringing down trees and power lines and flooding portions of the shoreline and Main Street. One woman was killed when a tree fell on her car.

Water lapped over roadways in the Saugatuck Shores, Compo Beach, and Old Mill Beach areas during high tide at 10 p.m. Portions of Main Street were also flooded. Connecticut Light & Power Co. said more than 5,000 Westport customers were in the dark, about half the town.

Emergency management officials sent out a CodeRed telephone notification to shoreline residents recommending that they move to higher ground. But it was not clear how man heeded the advice. Longtime residents said the flooding was not as severe as the 1992 nor’easter.

Half a dozen persons from a STAR group home that was without electricity showed up to spend the night at the Westport Center for Senior Activities.
