Darien Mom: He’s Sent to Prison, She’s Facing Foreclosure

A Darien mother of two whose ex-husband has been sent to prison for bilking investors in his Westport jewelry business out of more than $500,000 has gone public with her feelings of being “financially terrorized” as she faces foreclosure on her home.

In a blog entry headlined “Down and Out in Darien: My Foreclosure,” Kathryn Higgins wrote: “Enduring an impending foreclosure, combined with not knowing where you’ll go and how you’ll get there and how you will care for your kids, is excruciating.”

Her ex-husband, Anthony Iati, 48, was sentenced to 20 months in prison last month after pleading guilty to interstate transportation of money obtained from fraud. (See WestportNow July 20, 2009) He formerly owned a jewelry business in Westport at 191 Post Road West.

“My difficult divorce and difficult ex-husband…has resulted in increasing financial stress for me,” Higgins said.” And last week I went to court and learned that the foreclosure on my house, a modest one in a posh community with excellent schools, will be finalized in May of 2010.”
