In a statement, he said selectman Avi Kaner, his running mate in 2013—but now too busy with his family business to run again—would serve as campaign manager.
The statement also revealed the Marpe-Tooker campaign slogan: “Leadership. Experience. Results.”
The announcement came two days after WestportNow reported that he and Tooker on March 9 filed paperwork to run with the State Election Enforcement Commission (SEEC). (See WestportNow March 18, 2017)
“It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve our community, and I look forward to four more years of working on behalf of all Westporters to preserve and improve the town we love,” Marpe said.
Kaner pointed to Marpe accomplishments since becoming first selectman: ‘improving our town finances; delivering quality service for residents; keeping property taxes rates flat; upgrading key town amenities, beautifying our downtown area, and preserving our commercial tax base by promoting Westport as an attractive place to locate and conduct business.”
He added, “This has been achieved despite a very challenging economic environment created by Hartford. I know that Jim, with Jen Tooker by his side, will continue the remarkable progress for Westport in his next term.”
On Friday, Republican Board of Finance Vice Chair Michael Rea filed paperwork with the SEEC forming an exploratory committee that he told WestportNow is intended to allow him to consider running for first selectman.
On the Democratic side, state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg has also filed similar paperwork that he said paves the way for him to seek his party’s nomination for first selectman.
