Westport Names Disabilities Municipal Agent
First Selectman Gordon Joseloff announced the appointment of Teresa Giegengack, assistant director of human services for the Town of Westport, as the town’s first Municipal Agent for People with Disabilities.
Giegengack will be responsible for assessing the needs of people with disabilities and their families in the community, identifying programs to meet those needs, and assuring that Westporters know about and use the services available to them.
“This newly created position was one of the recommendations of the Community Inclusion Task Force in its final report issued in September 2007,” said Joseloff. “The position is patterned after the existing position of Municipal Agent for the Elderly.”
Another key recommendation of the task force was the formation of an Advisory Council for People with Disabilities. This advisory body would be ongoing and its purpose would be to address disability related issues affecting residents of Westport and Weston.

Joseloff Asks Finance Board to Reconsider 7% Tax Increase
Westport First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff tonight asked the Board of Finance to reconsider its decision to increase taxes by 7 percent and the board agreed to meet on the issue again on Monday.
The board had voted May 21 for the larger-than-anticipated increase in the town’s mill rate because of an accounting standards change that calls for disclosure of escalating future costs of retiree health care benefits. (See WestportNow May 21, 2008)
Joseloff, who said he had worked hard to keep the municipal budget increase under 4 percent, noted that specific information about the town’s financial obligation to meet the standards change came only two days before the board’s vote.
“You set the mill rate with very little information,” he said. “I would respectfully ask you to readdress this. I think it is unfortunate. I am disappointed. It impacts so many residents of our community.”

Friedson, who has a court date of June 16 on his arrest, said Judge Burton A. Kaplan told Sarah during the three-minute hearing that “he liked her spirit.”
Meanwhile, the Friedsons said they received formal notification of Sarah’s 10-day suspension from school for “insubordination, truancy, and creating an unsafe educational environment by attempting to incite students for a possible riot.”
