Storm Warning Clears Compo Waters

WestportNow.com Image
An announcement by lifeguards at Westport’s Compo Beach of a possible thunder and lighting storm this afternoon kept beachgoers out the water for about an hour as a safety precaution until the thunderstorm that could be heard in the distance passed safely to the east. The storm touched off severe thunderstorm warnings and even a tornado warning farther up the Connecticut coast. However, there were heavy rains over Compo in the evening. WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 14 Brooklawn Drive

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit is in process to demolish the house at 14 Brooklawn Drive off of Westport’s Easton Road. Built in 1953, the one-story ranch (r) has 2,130 square feet and sits on a one-acre property. The property owners constructed a replacement house on the same property.  Because the original house was built more than 50 years ago, the demolition application is being reviewed by the Historic District Commission at its meeting next week. Hampus Hellermark, the Swedish running back who was a standout player on Westport’s Staples High School football squad last year, won most valuable player honors in Europe this summer and now is looking forward to playing U.S. college football.

Having learned much from Coach Marce Petroccio and his Staples teammates, he returned to his native Sweden last fall and played for the Sweden national team in the under 19 European Championship in Sevilla, Spain this summer.

Sweden had a great tournament and won a silver medal after a tight final (9-6) against the German national team in the competition organized by the European Federation of American Football .

Hellermark won the most valuable player for the tournament as the best junior player in Europe, playing with No. 6 as he did for Staples.

RTM Okays 180-Day Demolition Delay Ordinance

Westport’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) tonight approved an ordinance which would allow a 180-day delay on demolition of homes deemed to have historic value.

Proponents hailed the measure as helping to preserve Westport’s character while a few RTM members voiced concerns that a six-month delay could impose a hardship on a homeowner anxious to sell.

Maggie Feczko, chair of the Westport Historic District Commission, said it was urgent to pass the ordinance because she said Westport has more teardowns per capita than any other community in Connecticut.

She said the commission maintains an inventory of historic homes and while admittedly incomplete, it does provide guidance to residents seeking information about whether their property is historic.

“I am delighted to have John step into this very important position,” Joseloff said. “John worked alongside Don for many years and is very well prepared to take on these additional responsibilities.

“We did extensive interviewing of potential candidates from throughout the state, but as time went by we came to realize that the best candidate was right here in Town Hall.”

Westport Teen on Japanese Peers: “They Study, Study, Study”

Jeremy Lawrence, 19, a 2007 Staples High School graduate, addressed the Westport Rotary Club today about his experiences in Japan as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program. He described his peers in Japan by saying that “kids attend school, then study, study, study, then go out to a club, and then study, study, study.” He said it was difficult to get to really know Japanese students his age because they seem to always be immersed in studying. In a few weeks, Lawrence will enter Reed College in Portland, Ore. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Old School Sailing

Several old Atlantics race out of Westport’s Cedar Point Yacht Club on Sunday with their colorful spinnakers for the downwind leg of the competition. The Atlantics have a venerable history--they were designed in 1928, one of the earliest one-design boats, and one of the first fleets was launched from Pequot Yacht Club. They were very popular in the 1930s and 1940s, the peak of their production. Cedar Point is one of the few clubs that still races these historical boats.
