“Water 101” at Westport Town Hall
![]()
Virginia de Lima, director, U. S. Geological Survey Connecticut Water Science Center, addressed residents tonight on what she terms “Water 101” at Westport Town Hall. She spoke of concerns about septic systems, private drinking water wells and protecting the aquifer. She urged resident not to be discouraged as efforts to reduce contamination of water systems could take decades to become apparent. Her remarks were broadcast live on the town’s cable access channel and will be rebroadcast in coming days. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Save the Children Aiding Displaced in Georgia
Westport’s Save the Children said today it is moving quickly to provide assistance to thousands of children and family members caught in the crossfire of an armed conflict in South Ossetia bordering on Russia and Georgia. The agency has worked in Georgia for 15 years.
“We need to assist thousands of families caught in the middle of this conflict,” said Tom Vincent, Save the Children’s Country Director in Georgia.
“We are especially concerned about families in Tskinvali as well as families living in the nearby town of Gori across the border in Georgia. The fighting has been very intense since Thursday night and it appears many families do not have access to clean water.”
Vincent said that hospitals in Tskinvali and in Gori have been overwhelmed with injured patients and are running out of medical equipment and supplies.

Terex Buys Port Equipment Business
Westport’s Terex Corp., which makes construction, transport and mining equipment, will buy the port equipment businesses of privately-owned Fantuzzi Industries for about 215 million euros ($323 million) to expand its cranes business, Terex said today.
The port equipment businesses, with factories in Italy, Germany and China, had 2007 sales of 447 euros ($671 million), Terex said. It expects the deal to close in the fourth quarter and to boost its earnings by the end of 2009.
“This acquisition provides us with an important growth opportunity in the intermodal transportation area of infrastructure,” Terex Chief Executive Ronald DeFeo said in a statement.
“The acquisition is an excellent fit with our strategy of expanding our market presence in related product areas and is a natural extension of our Cranes business.”
Talking Transportation : Next Stop Penn Station?
By Jim Cameron
Special to WestportNow
Will Connecticut rail commuters someday be able to travel directly from Fairfield County to New York City’s Penn Station? Maybe, but not anytime soon.
As with many good ideas that seem so obvious, this one also has been studied thoroughly and found to be problematic in a number of respects. But once again, Gov. M. Jodi Rell is challenging the Connecticut Department of Transportation to explain why good ideas like this can’t be implemented. Here, governor, are a few of the reasons:
Inadequate Equipment: As any commuter on Metro-North can tell you, we don’t have enough seats for existing service to Grand Central let alone expansions to new stations. But recently the Canadian rail-car manufacturer Bombardier, having lost the bidding war for the new M8 cars to Kawasaki, was lobbying Hartford to fund railcars we never asked for--double-decker cars with push-pull electric locomotives.
They’d be perfect for new express service to Penn Station, they claim. Those cars may work in New Jersey, for which they were designed, but were long ago rejected by the Connecticut DOT for good reasons.

Westport artist Miggs Burroughs uses a prop folded like an accordion as he explained the lenticular process at a reception today at the Pequot Library in Southport for the current “Pinholes & Pixels” exhibit. The display shows lenticular works created by Burroughs--in which views change depending on the viewer’s perspective--and works by Fairfield photographer Paul Jones (at rear, r). whose craft is pinhole photography. This involves images formed by a beam of light, the diameter of which governs its sharpness. The exhibit runs through Aug. 31. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

NY Times Cites WestportNow and “Famed” Teardown Feature
A New York Times regional roundup of suburban news and personal Web pages cites WestportNow and its “famed” Teardown of the Day feature.
The story, appearing in the Sunday Connecticut and other suburban regional sections and titled “Voices from the Suburban Blogosphere,” is accompanied by an almost half-page illustration that features WestportNow among named Web sites.
“Connecticut has also birthed a handful of successful town blogs,” the Times said.
Noting that WestportNow has more than 40,000 monthly readers, the Times added: “Its famed ‘Teardown of the Day’ feature highlights one of the town’s biggest hot-button issues, but the site’s readers have come to rely on it for fast-track reporting on gas line breaks, traffic snags, and the like.”

Traffic was detoured from the Sherwood Island Connector to Wakenor Road as crews worked on the 6-inch high pressure underground line. The roadway was shut down from about 8:30 a.m. until shortly after 1 p.m.
The incident followed an electrical problem at about 7 a.m. at the Sherwood Diner that forced the restaurant to close after firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the basement.
Connecticut Light and Power Company crews investigating the Sherwood Diner power problem discovered a squirrel had shorted out a nearby circuit and at the same time detected a strong odor of gas in the area, said Assistant Fire Chief Larry Conklin.

Town Hall Mural Gets Makeover
![]()
A 72-year-old Westport Town Hall mural is getting a makeover, thanks to fine arts restorer Peggy Van Witt. The 6-by-8-foot painting by Howard Heath, called “The Administration of a Community” and located in a lower level hallway, is one of 32 artworks completed by 17 Westport artists as part of the Westport Works Progress Administration (WPA) Arts Project. The program ran from 1934 to 1937 to provide jobs and income to the unemployed during the Great Depression. Now part of the Westport Schools Permanent Art Collection, all of the town’s WPA paintings have been restored and reframed where needed and are on view in schools and public buildings. The National Weather Service in Upton N.Y. has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for Westport and nearby areas until 6:30 p.m..
It said the National Weather Service was tracking a series of slow moving thunderstorms producing rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
An advisory urged resident not to drive vehicles into areas where the water covers the roadway and reminded them that most flooding deaths occur in automobiles.
It said excessive runoff from this storm will cause flooding of urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.
