Greens Farms Road Backup

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Greens Farms Road between Hillsppint Road and Compo Road South was bumper-to-bumper southbound late today as drivers sought to avoid backups on I-95 following an accident on the highway in light snow and slippery conditions. The National Weather Service said snow will continue to fall across the region into early evening with accumulations of up to 1 inch and between 1 and 2 inches in some spots. Homecoming Explored in WestportREADS Talk

WestportNow.com Image
It was a full house at the Westport Library today as Mark Schenker, dean of academic affairs in Yale College, addressed the theme of homecoming in “Bettyville,” the 2017 WestportREADS selection by George Hodgman. The book tackles questions about the author’s identity as a gay man, as a writer and as a son as he travels home to care for his irascible mother. ‘Story Explorers’ Launches at Library

WestportNow.com Image
Hope Ventricelli of the Westport Young Woman’s League (WYWL) today read a book in the popular “Biscuit” series to children at the Westport Library. It was the launch of a page-to-stage initiative by the Westport Country Playhouse, the library, and WYWL of a new, free-of-charge program, “Story Explorers,” which is intended to promote childhood literacy while also enhancing children’s experiences of attending the Playhouse’s Family Festivities shows. A musical production of “Biscuit” will be staged at the Playhouse on Sunday, Jan.  22, at 1 and 4 p.m., which is recommended for ages 4 to 8. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Phyllis Groner for WestportNow.com

Birds of a Feather

WestportNow.com Image
A WestportNow reader spotted these birds on a house on Maple Avenue North (he said there were 11 but coudn’t get them all in one shot) and said they appeared to be hawks. However, Mark Molesworth, a WestportNow contributing photographer who often photographs birds, said they looked to him more like turkey vultures, which do occasionally congregate like this, unlike hawks, which do not.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Gendell for WestportNow.com

Police Chief Foti Koskinas told the Board of Selectmen this week that he has already identified a Black Lab for the program.

The board accepted $25,100 in donations for the department’s K-9 unit, which runs primarily through donations.

Koskinas, who first disclosed to the board in September that he was seeking a bomb detection dog (see WestportNow Sept. 28, 2016), said a K-9 unit officer would handle the dog as a second dog.

The 11th Annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration, featuring keynote speaker Tricia Rose, a Brown University professor, will be held at 3 p.m.

Free and open to the public, the celebration is presented in partnership with TEAM Westport, Westport Country Playhouse, and the Westport/Weston Interfaith Council. TEAM stands for Together Effectively Achieving Multiculturalism.

“In a year of increased conflict and violence, and at a time of an alarming growth in hateful speech and actions across our divided nation, people of good will and all faiths need to come together to listen and learn from one another and to stand together in our commitment to building the ‘beloved community’ that Dr. King envisioned,” said the Rev. Ed Horne of United Methodist Church of Westport and Weston, chair of the celebration organizing committee.

Malloy to Attend Inaugural

By Mark Pazniokas

www.ctmirror.org

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a Democratic supporter of Hillary Clinton from her announcement through the primary season to her defeat on Nov. 8, said today he has decided after “much consideration” to attend the inauguration of Donald J. Trump, where he will be seated with other governors.

“While my first inclination was to decline, I’ve decided to accept the invitation,” said Malloy, who also is chairman of the Democratic Governors Association.

A 200-word explanation of the rationale for accepting an invitation to witness a presidential inauguration itself is a comment on how little has been routine about the transition from the administration of Barack Obama to Trump, a billionaire developer and reality-TV star who once lived in Greenwich.

Since Trump’s victory, there have been a steady stream of stories about celebrities, A-list and otherwise, who have declined invitations to perform or attend the inauguration. Republican governors opposed to Trump, such as Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, Larry Hogan of Maryland and John Kasich of Ohio, have come under extra scrutiny.

Super Doesn’t Take Top Ed Wage Earner Spot

By James Lomuscio

Top 25 Education Wage Earners for 2016 (PDF)

For the first time in at least 18 years, Westport’s schools superintendent did not make the top 10 list of the district’s highest wage earners, according to a 2016 report today from Elio Long, director of school business operations.

That’s because the superintendent salaries were basically split for 2016. Former Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon, who retired in June after 17 years at the helm, earned $148,640 and his replacement, current Superintendent Colleen Palmer earned $142,675, since July 1.

That being said, the top earner for the district in 2016 was Longo, earning $201,373.

James D’Amico, Staples High School principal, came in second on the list with a $180,475 salary.

Police: Westport Man Stomped on Crack Pipe

A Westport man with a history of run-ins with police was arrested Thursday when he was stopped on I-95 and allegedly stomped on a crack pipe found in his possession, police said.

Charles Vosgueritchian, 37, of West Parish Road, was driving south on I-95 when he was pulled over by Officer James Baker for not having a working left brake light, said Lt. David Farrell.

Vosgueritchian exited the vehicle and consented to a body search, he said. “Officer Baker located a crack pipe in Vosgueritchian’s pocket and placed it on the trunk,” Farrell said. “Vosgueritchian was handcuffed and advised he was being detained.

“Vosgueritchian then reached his handcuffed arms to the trunk area, and knocked the crack pipe to the ground. He then intentionally stepped on the crack pipe and broke it into multiple pieces.”
