The advisory said excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

Flood Advisory Issued
The National Weather Service today issued a flood advisory for Westport and the tri-state area and later upgraded it to a flash flood warning.
A mid-afternoon statement said as a warm front slowly moves toward the region periods of rain, occasionally heavy, will continue through this evening.
This heavy rain will result in minor flooding of low lying and poor drainage areas including street flooding, the advisory said.
More than 2 inches of rain had fallen by this evening, according to weather stations at Westport’s Bedford and Coleytown Middle Schools.

Changes Made in “Welcome to Westport” Sign
![]()
A “Welcome to Westport” sign at Post Road East and the Sherwood Island Connector has a new look. Town officials asked Kowalsky Bros. Inc.—which erected the garden and sign with state and town permission—to reduce the size of the company’s name. It had been the same as the word “Westport.” Also at the town’s request, Kowalksky eliminated its Web address and that of the sign company. While the road divider is state property, the town holds the permit to put the garden there. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

A report shortly after 11 p.m. of a car into a house brought police, fire and EMS personnel to 97 Hillspoint Road. They found a 2004 Audi A6 had run into the front yard of the home and ended up against the porch, according to Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar.
The car was heavily damaged and both air bags deployed. The lower structure of the porch was also damaged, he said.

Gorham Neighborhood Residents to Hold Open House
By
Residents of Westport’s Gorham Avenue area are inviting fellow Westporters to see first-hand their neighborhood and the impact a proposed condominium development would have on it.
An open house will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 290 Main St., which is the home of John and Susan McCarthy. The open house comes before public hearings start on an application to turn 5 Gorham Ave. and 296 Main St. into 20 condominiums, which would include some affordable housing.
The Historic District Commission will review the application to make comments to the Planning and Zoning Commission on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The P&Z will hold its first hearing on the matter on Sept. 7.
John McCarthy said people who attend the open house will have the opportunity to see the neighborhood and proposed plans first-hand.

“My view is that it may be that the only way we are able to encourage some political will on the part of Iraqis is to have a timeline for troop withdrawal,” Shays said.. “A timeline of when the bulk of heavy lifting is in the hands of the Iraqis.”
He added that most of the withdrawal could take place next year.

Health Officials Alert to West Nile
By
Westport health officials have not identified any mosquitoes that have the West Nile Virus in town, but the virus is in Connecticut and has claimed the life of one woman.
A New Haven woman died from West Nile Virus on Wednesday, and mosquitoes in 12 towns—including Bridgeport and Greenwich—have tested positive.
“None have tested for it in Westport or Weston,” said Sue Jacozzi, Westport-Weston Health District director.
The New Haven woman, who was elderly, was the second human case identified in the state, she said. The first was in a Bristol man earlier this month, she said, and he recovered.
