Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon congratulated the Staples English teacher who, he said, would make an outstanding spokesperson for education in Connecticut.

Departing Staples Principal John Brady, who reports to his new job Monday, spread the word among the staff, saying, “This is an honor that is richly deserved and long overdue.”

Kuroghlian was named Westport's top educator at a ceremony at Staples Sept. 27.

The state winner will be announced later this month at a press conference at the teacher's school.

On Nov. 9, there will be an awards ceremony at Hartford's Bushnell Memorial to honor all the districts teachers of the year as well as the 2005 Teacher of the Year.

A visiting team of 16 individuals from the state selection team will visit Staples on Oct. 21. The team will be on site for about two and a half hours talking to a large number of individuals representing various constituencies.

Through the years, Westport has had several teachers place among the 15 state semi-finalists and one other finalist, Karen Ernst, an elementary writing teacher now retired.

The state Teacher of the Year Selection Committee process is reminiscent of the visit last year by the Accreditation Team of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), which did a comprehensive review of the school itself, according to a district announcement.
