Westport EMS Seeks Volunteer Candidates
The Westport Emergency Medical Service, a division of the Westport Police Department, is looking for those who want to become an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Classes will be held at Norwalk Community College's Public Safety Academy beginning in early January, according to an announcement.
Space is limited and applicants for the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification must attend an information/review session Nov. 30 at the Westport Police/EMS classroom, 50 Jesup Road.
Westport EMS reserves the right to select the students for the class based on the number of applicants, the announcement said.
Once selected for the class, students must register for the class at NCC. Class tuition may be refundable based on later volunteer service.
Westport residents who are able to work day shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. are especially needed. No prior first aid training is necessary, but applicants must have reached their l9th birthday by graduation.
WVEMS, rated one of the country’s top EMS volunteer corps, is the volunteer support arm to the Police Department Emergency Medical Service Division.
WVEMS is a past recipient of both the “Connecticut Treasures” award and the national EMS Magazine “Gold Award.”
Upon completion of instruction, and passing the Connecticut certification examinations, the new EMT-B members will join crews on the town’s ambulances, working with experienced colleagues in caring for ill and injured patients.
Those interested in taking the EMT-B course and becoming volunteers should pick up an application at EMS Headquarters, 50 Jesup Road, or call EMS Coordinator Alan Yoder at (203) 34l-6081.
