Fairfield Tanker Truck Fire Shuts Down I-95 Northbound

UPDATE A tanker truck carrying a flammable chemical caught fire early today on Interstate-95 near Exit 19 in Fairfield, forcing closure of all northbound lanes and extensive delays, state police said.

No one was injured and the chemical did not ignite.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames shortly after 4 a.m., but about 20 Fairfield families living in the area had to be evacuated, said state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance. They were later allowed to return to their homes.

One northbound lane was reopened shortly before 7 a.m. but was closed down a short time later. Two northbound lanes were reopened by 11 a.m. and all lanes by about 1 p.m.
